MAINTAINING THE GARDEN PERIMETER

Even with cardboard and wood chips placed along the outer perimeter of the garden fence, weeds and grass continue to poke up and work their way into the garden beds.  So we're experimenting with a different system that, if successful, will be extended along the entire perimeter.

First, the morning was spent clearing weeds from the fence on the north side of the garden.  Then, a mesh privacy screen was fastened to the fence, with the bottom of the mesh folded over the ground and covered in wood chips.

Since this is the north side of the garden, the mesh screen will also protect the raised beds alongside the fence from chilly winds in the spring and fall.  While some weeds will find their way under the mesh and into the garden, this system should reduce the work of keeping the garden perimeter weed free.

Fingers crossed this works!
